We Support A Day Without A Woman

Today, March 8, is A Day Without A Woman, a demonstration of economic solidarity led by the organizers of the Women’s March on Washington, as well as many other groups around the world, and scheduled to coincide with International Women’s Day.

Like the historic Women’s March in January, A Day Without A Woman is an international call to action, meant to "highlight the economic power and significance that women have in the US and global economies, while calling attention to the economic injustices women and gender nonconforming people continue to face."

In the words of the organizers, this is the vision and the mission of A Day Without A Woman:

“In the same spirit of love and liberation that inspired the Women's March, we join together in making March 8th A Day Without a Woman, recognizing the enormous value that women of all backgrounds add to our socio-economic system--while receiving lower wages and experiencing greater inequities, vulnerability to discrimination, sexual harassment, and job insecurity. …

Anyone, anywhere, can join by making March 8th A Day Without a Woman, in one or all of the following ways:

  • Women take the day off, from paid and unpaid labor
  • Avoid shopping for one day (with exceptions for small, women- and minority-owned businesses).
  • Wear RED in solidarity with A Day Without A Woman

When millions of us stood together in January, we saw clearly that our army of love greatly outnumbers that of fear, greed, and hatred. Let's raise our voices together again, to say that women’s rights are human rights, regardless of a woman’s race, ethnicity, religion, immigration status, sexual identity, gender expression, economic status, age or disability.”

For many of us, especially entrepreneurs, taking a day off from work is a luxury we can’t afford. The organizers of A Day Without A Woman offer many ideas on how to accommodate that reality and still participate.

So, whether you take the day off or can only attend a lunchtime rally, strike with your wallet or simply wear red, we hope you’ll join in on International Women's Day in whatever ways you choose and show the world what A Day Without A Woman looks and feels like.
