I am a photographer known for my poetic infrared imagery of people and celebrations from all around the globe. My ongoing body of work ‘Still Points in a Turning World’ explores our universal cross-cultural truths: the importance of family, community, ritual and the amazing diversity of its expression.
The mermaid is an iconic figure representing a woman who is at ease in the waters of life, of emotion, and of sexuality. She shows us how to embrace our sensuality, affirming the essence of our feminine nature and the playfulness of our spirits. The mermaid embodies our connection with the wild, the untamed side of our nature that lies beneath the surface of our external dispositions.
I have been photographing the Coney Island Mermaid Parade for 20 years and it never disappoints. The Parade celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and myths of Coney Island. In hand-made costumes as Mermaids, Neptunes and various sea creatures, everyone promenades, sashays and struts riotously down Surf Avenue. It’s an all-inclusive affair with participants ranging from infants to octogenarians. It is part-fantasy, part-escapism, but all real.
The festival is a celebration of the imagination, combining all the oddities and all the joys of artistic self-expression.
I'm offering this special edition set of three 8 and ½ by 11 inch fine art giclee prints of my photgraphs from the Mermaid Parade to WHAT NOW WHAT NEXT members for 550 dollars. Individual prints of the Mermaids are available for 200 dollars each.
